Human beings need to feel trust to feel safe, and trust is something that needs to be earned by action.
Since being elected to the City Council in 2021, I’ve worked with community residents to hold events that celebrate their cultural heritage. I helped fundraise to purchase the cultural heritage flags on the street lamp poles, and I work with our teachers to display our children’s art for Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.
An inclusive city also means having police officers who are respectful of all our city residents. I believe the Monmouth police department is ahead of the rest of the country with their community policing strategies, such as contracting with mental health professionals to assist with calls. The police have a tough job, and I appreciate the department’s foresight to bring in mental health professionals who can assist in de-escalating situations with people struggling with mental health issues. To expand this forward-thinking, I would like to continue to work with the police department and help them build trust among people of color, indigenous, and black people. Building trust and unity in our community through action will keep everyone safe, citizens and police.
